Your Winter Basecamp: Cozy Cottages Near Ski Wentworth & Beyond
There’s something magical about a Nova Scotia winter. Snow-covered hills, crisp mountain air, and the kind of quiet that only comes when the world is blanketed in white. And after a day of adventure? There’s nothing better than coming home to a cozy cottage with a hot tub waiting under the stars.
Field and Fern Cottages in Balmoral Mills is your perfect winter basecamp — minutes from the slopes, tucked into the woods, and built for exactly this kind of getaway.
Hit the Slopes at Ski Wentworth
Just a 25-minute drive from our door, Ski Wentworth is Nova Scotia’s premier ski destination. Whether you’re carving down groomed runs, tackling the terrain park, or trying snow tubing with the kids, Wentworth has something for everyone.
- Downhill skiing & snowboarding — 20+ runs across all skill levels
- Cross-country skiing — beautifully groomed Nordic trails winding through the Wentworth Valley
- Snow tubing — pure fun for families and groups
- Fat biking — ride the snow-packed trails on oversized tires for a unique winter thrill
After a full day on the mountain, imagine soaking in our hot tub while snowflakes drift down through the trees. That’s the Field and Fern experience.
Snowmobiling the Backcountry
Northern Nova Scotia is snowmobile country. The Cumberland Snowmobile Club maintains an extensive trail network that winds through forests and fields across the region. Balmoral Mills puts you right in the heart of riding territory — load up the sleds and hit the trails straight from the area.
ATV & Quading in Winter
The adventure doesn’t stop when the snow flies. ATV and quad trails stay active through the winter months, offering a completely different way to experience the snowy backcountry. The rolling terrain around Wentworth and the Cobequid Hills is ideal for winter riding.
Snowshoeing in Wentworth
For a quieter pace, strap on snowshoes and explore the Wentworth Valley backcountry. Trails wind through old-growth forest and along frozen streams. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it’s right in our backyard. The Wentworth Hostel area offers well-known routes, or simply head into the woods and make your own path.
Warm Up in Tatamagouche
The charming village of Tatamagouche is just 10 minutes north, and it’s full of reasons to visit after a day outdoors.
- Tatamagouche Brewing Company — Warm up with a craft beer flight in their taproom. Local brews, great vibes, and often live music on weekends.
- Appleton Chocolates — Handcrafted chocolates and hot chocolate that will make your whole day. A must-stop.
Explore Truro
About 30 minutes south, the town of Truro offers plenty of winter diversions:
- Victoria Park — Even in winter, this stunning gorge park is worth a visit. The trails along the waterfalls and cliffs are beautiful with snow, and the park stays accessible year-round.
- Downtown Truro — Browse local shops, grab lunch at one of the downtown restaurants, and check out the famous tree sculptures — dozens of carved tree trunks turned into works of art throughout the town.
Sugar Moon Farm Pancake Brunch
This one’s a winter highlight. Sugar Moon Farm in Earltown (just 15 minutes away) serves up legendary pancake brunches with their own maple syrup. Hike their trails through the sugar bush, then sit down to a stack of pancakes you won’t forget. It’s a Nova Scotia tradition and one of the best meals you’ll have all winter.
After breakfast you can make use of the snowshoe rentals and enjoy the trails around sugar moon farms.
Ice Fishing
When the lakes and ponds freeze over, ice fishing becomes a favourite local pastime. Drop a line, enjoy the silence, and maybe catch dinner. It’s a quintessentially Canadian winter experience, and there are spots nearby to try it.
