Your Summer Adventure Hub: Beaches, Biking & Beyond from Balmoral Mills
When summer arrives in northern Nova Scotia, this corner of the province comes alive. Long sunny days, warm ocean water, wild beaches, mountain trails, and a pace of life that lets you actually enjoy it all.
Field and Fern Cottages sits right in the middle of it — your launchpad for the best summer the Maritimes has to offer.
Mountain Biking at Bike Wentworth
Just 25 minutes away, Bike Wentworth offers lift-access mountain biking on the same slopes that host skiers in winter. Ride the chairlift up, then choose from a variety of downhill trails through the forest — from flowy beginner runs to technical black diamonds.
It’s one of Atlantic Canada’s best mountain bike parks, and it’s practically in our backyard.
Hit the Beaches
The Northumberland Strait is known for having some of the warmest salt water north of the Carolinas, and the beaches here are stunning.
- Rushton’s Beach — A beautiful, quieter beach near Tatamagouche with warm water and sandy shores. Great for families.
- Melmerby Beach — One of Nova Scotia’s most popular beaches, about 45 minutes east. Gorgeous white sand, supervised swimming, and big beach energy.
- Caribou/Munroes Island Provincial Park — Near the PEI ferry terminal, this park offers sandy beaches, hiking trails, and beautiful coastal scenery. A perfect combo of beach day and nature walk.
Pack a cooler, grab the beach chairs, and you’ll be toes-in-the-sand within 30 minutes of leaving the cottage.
Fishing
Cast your line in one of the region’s rivers or head out on the water for a guided experience.
- River John — A charming fishing village on the North Shore, perfect for a quiet afternoon of river or shore fishing.
- Discover The Strait — Book a boat tour on the Northumberland Strait for deep-sea fishing, lobster excursions, or a scenic cruise along the coast.
ATV & Quading
The trails around Nuttby Mountain and the broader Cobequid Hills are some of Nova Scotia’s best for ATV riding. ATVANS maintains an extensive trail network across the province, with excellent routes accessible right from the Balmoral Mills area. Whether you bring your own machine or rent locally, the terrain here is made for it.
Cycling the Scenic Trails
Prefer two wheels on pavement? The region has incredible cycling routes:
- Sunrise Trail — This scenic route follows the Northumberland Strait coast from Amherst to the Canso Causeway. Pick a section and ride past beaches, fishing villages, and farmland.
- Butter Trail — A local favourite winding through the pastoral countryside around Tatamagouche and the surrounding communities.
- Bike rentals are available in the area if you’re travelling light.
Hiking
Lace up your boots — the hiking here is excellent.
- Wentworth Falls — A moderate trail through the forest to a beautiful waterfall in the Wentworth Valley. One of the area’s most popular hikes.
- Drysdale Falls — A lesser-known gem near Earltown with a scenic waterfall at the end of a peaceful woodland trail.
- Rogart Mountain Trail — A rewarding hike with panoramic views of the Cobequid Hills and surrounding valleys.
- Balmoral Grist Mill — More of a heritage walk than a hike, this provincial heritage site is right in Balmoral Mills. Tour the restored 1874 water-powered grist mill and walk the grounds along the brook.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding
Get out on the water with North Shore Adventure Outfitters in Tatamagouche. They offer kayak and paddleboard rentals and guided tours along the beautiful North Shore coastline. Paddle through calm harbours, explore the shoreline, and keep an eye out for seals and bald eagles.
Tatamagouche: Markets, Culture & Wine
The village of Tatamagouche (10 minutes away) is a summer destination in its own right:
